After 68 years the rugged, no-frills Land Rover Defender has reached the end of the road, killed off by red tape.
For despite its remarkable ability to conquer all terrains the Defender can no longer climb the mountain of world regulations on exhaust emissions and crash safety. Since 1948 more than two million of the tough 4x4s have travelled the world’s most challenging landscapes, crossing deserts and Arctic wastelands.
They’ve fought wars, been dropped from planes, starred in a Bond fi lm and transported the Queen around almost every Commonwealth country.
